Thai Massage TherapyThai Massage or Thai Body Work or Thai Yoga Therapy as it is sometimes called is known as Nuad Phaen Boran (Ancient Massage) in Thailand. This therapeutic technique is considered Indian in origin, having been developed by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (Shivago) but it migrated to Thailand with the spread of Theraveda Buddhism. This therapeutic method in Thailand draws upon Buddhist teachings, the Indian science of Ayurveda, Yoga, Chinese medicine and Thai medicine. Thai massage practice had been a primary form of health care in Thailand for many years, passed down within the family as an oral tradition that has now been converted into a more formal program of study, with many Thai massage schools operating within Thailand and also internationally. There are two major styles of Thai massage, a slower, more flowing form of movement known as Northern Style, the style that I practice, and a more rapid, intense style known as Southern Style. Thai massage is quite different from more “traditional” forms of massage. The client is fully clothed, the massage is performed on a mat or futon on the floor, no oils are used (though occasionally essential oils may be used for aromatherapy), and the massage consists of compressions of the body tissue and larger movements and stretching of the body. Overall, the massage can be viewed as having “yoga done to you” and the client emerges from a session feeling balanced, stretched, refreshed and energized after a session.
